The Marriage Record of Albert Francis CHAPLIN, Sr. and Emma Alice LYTON

Recently, I discovered that Ancestry had added the Iowa, Marriage Records, 1880 - 1937 database to its collections. While I don't have Iowa ancestors, my children do on their paternal grandmother's side. I was hoping to confirm marriage information for their great-great-grandparents, Albert Francis CHAPLIN, Sr. and Emma Alice LYTON. A family history written by an aunt of their grandmother lists Iowa as their marriage place [1], but no date is given. Their eldest child was born in 1892 in Surprise, Butler Co., Nebraska, but the next two children were both born in Fremont Co., Iowa [2], as was Emma [3], so I figured that was the likely location of their marriage.

A year and a half ago, my children's aunt received the Chaplin Family Bible [4] from a relative, which gave Albert and Emma's marriage date, but not the location:

I was able to locate the marriage record on Ancestry [5] with no difficulty:

The record is written across the top two lines of the register. I've enlarged and cropped the image to facilitate reading it on this blog. You can click on any of the images in this blog to view an enlargement; then use your "Back" button to return to this post.

As you can see, both Albert and Emma were living in Percival, Fremont Co., Iowa and that is where they were married on 18 March 1891 (confirming the Bible entry) by the Justice of the Peace, D. Lumm. It is interesting to me that no witness names were recorded on this register page for any of the marriages recorded here. That's too bad; I would have liked to have known who the witnesses for their marriage were.

From other research I've done, I know that their parents' names were not quite recorded in full or with accuracy here. Albert's parents were Gideon CHAPLIN and Susan W. HAINLINE. Emma's parents were Henry LYTON and Maria(h) Emily DAILEY. Henry's name was an alias. He was born George TURK in Ottawa, Ontario and came to the U.S. to serve in the Union Army during the Civil War. He changed his name at that time, although it is not clear exactly why.

Dates from 1867 to 1919 appear to have been written in the same hand and at the same time. One marriage entry, dated 15 February 1922, appears to be written in the same hand, but at a later time than the other entries.

Surname Saturday: HAINLINE, HENLEIN

The HAINLINE name originated as the German HENLEIN. This family was located in the area known as the Palatinate, or Pfaltz, Germany. Protestants from this area emigrated to North America and other areas to escape religious persecution, and were called "Palatines." It appears the HENLEIN family emigrated in the late 18th century with a large number of other Palatines to what is now Virginia.

Stories and History:

Ahnentafel #200 - Johannes HENLEIN (d. 1775) - born in Pfaltz, Germany; married Catherine KUHN (dates unknown) and had 11 known children. Immigrated to North America and settled in what is now Virginia.

Ahnentafel #100 - John HENLINE (1760 - 1834) - born in Virginia. Wife's name is unknown, but they had six known children. He died in Montgomery Co., Kentucky.

Ahnentafel #50 - John W. HAINLINE (1796 - 1861) - born in Montgomery Co., Kentucky; married Mary DeVERRE (1803 - 1871) in 1826 in Clark Co., Kentucky. They had 11 known children. He died in McDonough Co., Illinois.

Ahnentafel #25 - Susan W. HAINLINE (1828 - 1914) - born in Montgomery Co., Kentucky. She was the second wife of Gideon CHAPLIN (1821 - 1876), whom she married in 1850 in McDonough Co., Illinois. They had ten children. She continued to run the family farms with her sons' help after her husband died. The family emigrated to Union Co., Iowa and then Cheyenne Co., Kansas, where she died after a stroke a fall.

Ahnentafel #12 - Albert Francis CHAPLIN (1868 - 1946) - born in Afton, Union Co., Iowa. He married Emma Alice LYTON (1874 - 1959) about 1891 in Iowa. They had six children, and lived all over the Midwest and West (Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, Colorado, Idaho) before settling in Washington State, where Albert died.

Ahnentafel #6 - Forrest "Frank" L. CHAPLIN (1901 - 1977) - born in Yankton, Yankton Co., South Dakota. Came out West in a covered wagon as a boy with his family...yes, they still had them in the early 1900s! Married Leona Mary MARTIN (1906 - 1993) in 1925 in Vancouver, Clark Co., Washington. they had three children and lived in various counties in Central and Western Washington State. Frank died in Othello, Adams Co., Washington.

Biography or Information of Interest: Again, I don't have a lot of detailed information on the Hainline brothers. I know they descended from Palatine immigrants with the surname HENLEIN who arrived in Virginia in the mid-1700s. The fact that Joseph lived less than 17 years after the war ended tells me that he may have died of war-related injury or illness.

Died: 12 January 1882 in Sciota Twp., McDonough Co., Illinois

Biography or Information of Interest: David is a bit of a mystery. While he died just after the war, it is not clear from what little information I can find if he died from a war-related injury or illness, although I suspect that is the case. Since I currently don't have access to his pension records (for his wife and orphans), I don't have the necessary details.

Biography or Information of Interest: There are three other Hainlines who served in Company A of the 16th Illinois Infantry, and they probably are Baxter's cousins: James L., Nathan T. and William H. HAINLINE. While researching Baxter, I recently found some contact information for one of his descendants and am waiting to hear back.

Buried: unknown; probably in Oregon
